Before joining the workforce as a nurse, you’ll have one final exam to take. This is the NCLEX or the National Council Licensure Examination. Both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses must take these nursing board exams.

What is the NCLEX?

The NCLEX consists of a computer-based adaptive exam. This tests your critical thinking skills and judgment ability before you officially enter the field. In other words, it determines if it is safe for you to begin working as a nurse. 

The mass majority of the exams you take prior to this test your knowledge. However, the NCLEX focuses on what you learned in school and applies it to real-world settings. A nurse must make difficult judgments daily. These nursing board exams will use your critical thinking skills to understand how you make judgments.

Many nursing programs divide classes based on subjects. These can include obstetrics, surgical, medical, psychiatric, and pediatric classes. However, the NCLEX combines all of these subjects. Furthermore, it consists of four categories with eight subcategories.

The majority of the questions consist of multiple-choice. However, some questions also consist of fill-in-the-blank, drag and drop, charts, and hot spots.

The nursing board exam contains a total of 265 questions. You must answer a minimum of 75 of those. Additionally, you will receive 15 experimental questions that neither count toward nor against you.

You have a maximum of six hours to complete the exam. Sections do not have any time limits besides the total six-hour maximum. You also have two option breaks: one at two hours and another at 3.5 hours.

The test can end in a number of ways:

• Once you finish a minimum of 75 correct answers.
• Once you finish 75 questions and demonstrate a lack of competency.
• Once you finish 265 questions.

Focus more on the maximum amount of time and questions. Although it’s possible to pass the exam in 75 questions, plan as if it will take a total of 265. Even if it seems like everyone is finishing before you, don’t become discouraged. You’re still in the game as long as the computer continues to let you answer.
