As the pandemic continues, so do the nursing-related issues coming to light in healthcare. However, awareness toward these issues is beginning to be addressed changing the future of nursing forever with the mass media’s help. Since the 1990s, job-related nursing issues such as mental health and work burnout have been addressed, but not well. With the pandemic making many nurses’ lives more difficult, the media helps spread compassion fatigue awareness and prevention. Also known as Secondary Traumatic Stress, this condition is a consequence of exposure to those who experience direct trauma. Common compassion fatigue symptoms include excessive blame, suppressed emotions, flashbacks, isolation, poor self-care, denial, physical ailments, and extreme mental and physical exhaustion.

Unsurprisingly, compassion fatigue can severely impact a nurse’s workday. Nurses experiencing secondary traumatic stress may poorly collaborate with other nurses, demonstrate high absenteeism, fail to meet deadlines, hold negative attitudes toward management, show an unwillingness to change routines, and lack of hope for a patient’s outcome. To rectify the prevalent issue of compassion fatigue, organizations are screening their nurses for symptoms. Additionally, many nurses are obtaining certifications in Compassion Fatigue Education to help those suffering from the condition.

Increasing nurse self-care is crucial to patient safety. Research indicates that nurses who take care of themselves tend to also take better care of their patients. Certified Nurse Education Bonnie Fuller at Purdue University Global states, “There is a definite correlation between a healthy work environment and nurses being able to provide high-quality, safe care that influences positive patient outcomes. More institutions are recognizing the importance of a healthy environment for all. This can also be contributed to health care institutions seeking to be Magnet Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, or ANCC.” Furthermore, the American Nursing Association reported that there is significant room for improvement regarding nurses’ mental and physical quality of life.

In recent years, the tech revolution introduced talks of telemedicine and chatbot services to healthcare and nursing. However, implementation stalled, and most healthcare providers remained practicing medicine in traditional forms. As COVID-19 continues to impact almost every industry, healthcare finally pushed telemedicine to the frontlines of their operations and services. Telemedicine and chatbot services help automate role shortages, as there are many. In addition, this technology keeps both nurses and patients safe and offers a convenient way to seek assistance.

The surge in telemedicine increases a patient’s access to healthcare through video technology. It will continue to give nurses opportunities in a variety of settings even after the pandemic.

For example, telemedicine allows nurses to provide virtual care to elderly patients unable to travel. Additionally, expert nurses located in large urban settings can consult with nurses located in small rural settings more easily. 

Lastly, patients have better access to personal data and information. Some clinics are implementing this information from portable devices into patient records to better monitor health. Patients can thus oversee their health and become part of the decision-making process. Furthermore, this technology allows patients to schedule appointments, see test results and request medication refilled.
