This year, the pandemic has brought to light nursing-related issues more than ever before. With the help of the masses and the media, awareness toward the issues is beginning to be addressed changing the future of nursing forever. Nurses with more authority

Nurses take up the mass majority of healthcare roles. However, they are disproportionately represented on hospital boards. The American Hospital Association reported in a 2014 study that physicians hold 20% of hospital board seats while nurses barely hold 5%. However, this year, the Nurse on Boards Coalition is aiming for no less than 10,000 nurses on boards. The purpose of the coalition is to improve the health of American communities by adding more nurses to decision-making roles.

The coalition is a group of strong associations consisting of the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), the American Nurses Association (ANA), and another 18 national organizations. With nationally-recognized associations coming together to add nurses on hospital boards, it’s likely that nurses will continue to embrace leadership roles in both the healthcare field and hospitals.

In addition to board inclusion, more states will begin granting nurse practitioners full practice authority. Due to a national physician shortage combined with an aging baby boomer population, some states allow nurse practitioners to run clinics without physician oversight. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), 22 states plus Guam, Washington D.C., and Northern Marianna Islands granted nurse practitioners full practice authority. Sixteen states and three territories have reduced practice which consists of a collaborative agreement with another health provider. Only 12 states have a restricted practice requiring career-long supervision. However, given that both the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the National Council of Medicine recommend giving NPs full practice authorities, it’s only a matter of time before the remaining states join the full practice.

Increased specialization

Specialization allows for nurses to become experts in the field in which they work. Increased education in a specific field mitigates the risk of error. In addition, as people continue to obtain higher education, they expect the nurses treating them to contain a wealth of field knowledge. The patient and provider relationship is a crucial part of the nursing dynamic. Once a patient lacks trust, typical duties can be negatively impacted such as basic care and communication.

Specialization also opens the door for more opportunities and career advancements. The healthcare industry holds a greater demand for those at higher levels of practice. Therefore, nurses who choose to specialize typically gain increased salaries compared to their non-specialized counterparts. For example, a specialized RN holds a median annual income of about $71,000. An LPN holds a median salary of about $44,000. Furthermore, a specialized RN already holds a slightly higher job growth outlook at 1%.

Specialized nurses typically have BSNs, field-specific training, and a certification in one of several fields such as obstetrics, geriatrics, or psychiatry.

Currently, one percent of nurses care for over half of the United States’ hospitalized population. According to the Congressional Budget Office, more than 50% of the United States’ hospitalizations surpass the age of 65 years. Of that, 1% of nurses have a nursing certification in geriatrics. A widening gap exists between geriatrics nurses and the patients they treat with one nurse for almost 500 geriatrics patients. Furthermore, the elderly will make up 20% of the country’s population by 2050. As the United States population continues to age, this disparity will increase.

This undoubtedly means the geriatric specialty is the specialty of future nursing. Recruiting efforts for younger geriatrics nurses is well underway. These nurses typically hold either an undergraduate or a graduate degree. Many nursing programs lack geriatrics courses. However, many of this training can be found in bachelor’s programs. Certifications also exist that can increase your geriatric qualifications such as those in dementia or Alzheimer’s.

For those looking into graduate school, there are degree paths for the geriatrics specialty with clinical nurse specialists, doctor of nursing practice, and nurse practitioners. Many of these roles give you opportunities for leadership positions ranging from within institutional settings to home calls for homebound patients.
