Floating refers to moving between units. If one unit has a staff shortage, a supervisor may assign them to another unit. However, many times float pools exist where groups of nurses have float nurses as part of their job description. These nurses float from unit to unit as needed. Furthermore, a float nurse does not need to specialize in everything as it sounds. They move between interrelated units. Float Nurse Benefits

Flexibility

Float nurses must stay on their toes. They also frequently have to change their routine making most days quite the opposite of boring. Moreover, this leaves room for flexibility in their schedule. Although the minimum requirements must be met, float nurses can control their scheduled shifts. In addition to a flexible schedule, float nurses tend to earn a higher wage, sometimes as much as 15 percent. A float nurse must adapt to their environment quickly which takes skill and commitment. Float Nurse Disadvantages

Extra Stress

Nursing can be stressful. That’s quite the understatement, but with float nurses, you’ll most likely experience additional stress. Every float nurse must learn new protocols and processes. Something as simple as storing supplies and locating equipment becomes a challenge. Once a nurse floats to a new unit, they must quickly learn about their new environment. They don’t have much time to introduce themselves to new people, take tours and ask vital questions in addition to performing their job.

Patient-Nurse Relationship

Patients can see if a nurse feels stressed. Even experienced float nurses can nonverbally communicate stress and anxiety to their patients. In addition, if nurses can’t answer questions directly, it affects the patient-nurse relationship. This ultimately affects the patient’s experience altogether making them feel frustrated and anxious. It may make them also feel unsafe, which is a huge disadvantage to float nurses.

Inefficiency

Float nurses can be efficient in that they fill necessary positions. However, they can also be inefficient when doing so. Since they have a large learning curve when entering a new unit, simple tasks take time.
